In the early 2000's, commercials for Sarafem began hitting the airwaves as treatment for PMDD. The shopping cart ad was pulled after the FDA argued Eli Lilly's marketing too aggressive and claimed it was pitching Sarafem to women suffering from normal PMS.
First discovered by Eli Lilly and Company is 1972, Prozac was re-marketed as 'Sarafem' to help avoid confusion between its use in the treatment of depression vs PMDD. They even changed the color of the pills from green to pink as part of the branding.
Per an article by The Washington Post, "the launch of Sarafem was tied to the company's preparations for 'Year X' -- the company code name for the year patent protection runs out for Prozac."
